October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Shop for a Cure with our Eco Friendly and Socially Conscious Picks

By Bonny Osterhage

Boobies, ta-tas, jugs, hooters, rack. Call them anything you want if it makes you less inhibited when it comes to talking about your breasts. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and there is no better time to get acquainted with your own pair. According to the National Cancer Institute, one in every eight women will develop breast cancer within her lifetime. Early detection is key in fighting this devastating disease. Remember to perform monthly self-exams, get regular mammograms, as recommended by your physician, and, this month, shop for a cure. The following items will have you looking pretty in pink and, while they don’t all qualify as eco fashion, beauty and lifestyle, they are all supporting this important cause and we applaud their social responsibility.

Seriously?! SERIOUSLY?!

This is Barking Mad!

Okay, call us crazy, but we always thought that dogs were pretty easy to read. A bark by the door means, “I need to go out.” A bark by the bowl means, “Feed me.” Humping your leg means…well you know.  But, apparently, we’ve been underestimating our four-footed friends. According to the folks behind the Bowlingual Voice Dog Translator, Rover has plenty to say! Simply attach the transmitter to your pooch’s neck, hold the handheld unit and watch in astonishment as your dog’s bark is analyzed and translated into one of six different emotions. As if that’s not enough, the device also has fun games and features, such as analyzing your dog’s walk and mannerisms. At $210, we don’t need the Bowlingual to know that our dogs are saying, “Seriously?!” You paid how much for this ridiculous thing?” Or, “You really need to get a life.” Learn more at www.peoplepets.com.

SO HOT!

Superfruits = Super Skin

We know that smoothies are delicious and nutritious, but can they also be good for your face? The answer is yes! But before you go smearing on some concoction from your juicer, try the Fruit Smoothees line from dermae® Natural Bodycare. The yummy sounding (and smelling) skincare line is formulated for young skin that is experiencing the first signs of aging. The Smoothees deliver a one-two punch by combining antioxidant-rich superfruits, such as pomegranate and grape seed, with Vitamin E and Ester-C. Together, these potent recipes help skin fight off Mother Nature and retain its youthful glow. We have been using the silky-feeling Moisturizing Crème to quench our skin’s thirst with pleasing results. Fruit Smoothees are available at Whole Foods and other retailers. Visit www.dermae.com to learn more and to find a store near you.  Enter "Smoothees" into the search field to see the collection.
