WHITE APRICOT’S BEST OF FASHION IN 2008 - Our Picks for the Top Eco Friendly Clothing Designers We Covered This Year

by Carrie Pollare, Editor

Wow, has the eco fashion business come a long way over the past year. It seems like only yesterday we were struggling to find fashion forward sustainable designers to write about. Now, we have an abundance of very talented artists, all using sustainable and recycled materials and changing the face of eco friendly fashion as we know it. As 2008 draws to a close, we thought we’d ring it out with our picks for the year’s top eco fashion designers (in alphabetical order).

Note: Click on the name of the designer to see the original White Apricot story.

Deborah Lindquist Recycled Cashmere

Deborah Lindquist
The Queen of Recycled Cashmere has branched out quite a bit into new sustainable fabrics, not to mention an insanely fabulous wedding collection, but we still love the cashmere sweaters, scarves, fingerless gloves and hats with her signature appliqués. See the collection at www.deborahlindquist.com. Order or inquire at info@deborahlindquist.com.

Eco Friendly Dress from ecoSkin

ecoSkin
When it comes to beautiful, sophisticated dresses, no one does it like Sandy Skinner of ecoSkin. Each one manages to be understated and elegant, but with a whole lot of sexy and just the right amount of detail. You’ll turn heads…we promise. www.ecoskincollections.com

Lara Miller Eco Friendly Dresses

Lara Miller
Lara gets our vote for the most innovative designer, because her entire premise is that each of her avant garde dresses and tops can be worn many different ways. You essentially get more than one piece in one piece! Now that’s fashion forward, as well as budget helpful. Largest selection available at www.embodies.com.

Eco Friendly Dress from Larsen Gray

Larsen Gray
We’d call this collection clean and polished, but always with a few in your face bold details to liven things up. There’s a lot of flair going on here. One of the two designers, Nora Caliguri, appeared on the first season of Project Runway. The other, Rachelyn Porter, came from Chanel. Available at www.shopbop.com

Eco Luxury from Linda Loudermilk

Linda Loudermilk
Having coined and trademarked the term, “luxury eco™,” Linda Loudermilk is eco couture at its edgiest best. She’s also been a true innovator in working with new sustainable fabrics in her designs, like SeaCell (seaweed), Ingeo (corn) and EcoSpun (recycled plastic bottles). Go to www.lindaloudermilk.com to see the collections and find a store near you.

Organic by John Patrick

Organic by John Patrick
We think of John Patrick as the eco friendly Armani with sleek, elegant, classic styles and lines, done in sustainable fabrics. GRASS PHONE…

This is exactly what it looks like…a biodegradable cell phone made from grass. Seriously?! You know the old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words.” We just don’t think this one needs any additional commentary from us…

TWODALOO

TwoDaLoo

Togetherness takes on a whole new meaning with the TwoDaLoo, billed as the first toilet two people can use at exactly the same time.  It’s said to bring couples closer together and conserve the water supply at the same time by consolidating flushes.  Seriously?!  First off, who wants to stare at or talk to their significant other while taking care of business… Second, how the heck do you time it so you both need to use the contraption at the same time?  Oh, and let’s not forget the upgraded version, which includes a 7” TV and iPod docking station. Now, all it needs is a built-in coffee maker or wine chiller (depending on your schedule) and you’re set. So, we guess the couple that poops together…stays together? Unreal…

SHIT BOX…

Our minds are completely in the toilet on this one, but how could we resist bringing you this crappy story… sorry… This lovely product is endearingly called, "The Shit Box." It is a portable cardboard toilet, designed for outdoor use, made by the Brown Corporation (yes…this is for real).  It even has a mascot named Jack (pictured…don’t ask…).  According to the company, when not in use, it also doubles as a stool (it just keeps getting better and better…). The box also comes with 10 biodegradable bags. We think that just about wraps it up. Seriously?! We’re going to stop now before the shit really hits the fan…

Wrap it Up! Creative Gift Wrapping

by Lissa Coffey, CoffeyTalk

Editor’s Note: What goes better with a holiday gift guide than a great article on how to get creative with your gift wrapping…and do it in an eco friendly way!  We are so pleased to have Lissa Coffey of www.CoffeyTalk.com contributing to White Apricot this week with eight great gift wrap ideas.

When a gift is beautifully wrapped, it becomes a presentation! There are some great ways to wrap gifts today that are both creative and ecologically sound. Here are my top tips for ways to “think outside the box!”

FABRIC

A long-time tradition in Japan, gifts are wrapped in beautiful fabrics, often silk, that are re-used several times over. The fabric “itself” can be a gift, a useful item: a scarf, a bandana, a lunch bag. Tie it up with fabric ribbon, which can be worn as a belt or hair ornament.

WHAT’S COOKING

Kitchen gifts can be wrapped in colorful dish towels or use oven mitts as “pockets” to hold small items. Use tablecloths to wrap large gifts, to pad heavy or breakable items, such as dishes and ceramic-ware. Aprons are a great way to wrap gifts for the aspiring chef. A kitchen canister could hold many goodies!

HOME GROWN

For the gardener, wrap gifts in a bucket, a planter or hang them as ornaments on a living tree. Think of “organic” ideas, like bird seed and a bird feeder, garden tools, decorative stone or maybe a gardening book wrapped in a reusable canvas tote that can be used when shopping.

KID STUFF

Wrap presents for kids in knit caps, close the hat with a novelty barrette, bracelet or rubber bands. Put stuffed toys or action figures in a cowboy hat and secure with a bright bandana. Use fabric paints to customize a pillowcase and wrap up large gifts in that!

BOXING DAY

The day after Christmas is known as “boxing day” in England and Australia because that is the day so many boxes are thrown out! Put your boxes to good use elsewhere… wrap gifts in a hat box, a gift tin, a tool box or an artists case. How about using a pencil box, a card case, or a coffee mug for business people?

PAPER, PLEASE

If you must use paper, think of creative ways to re-use it: wrap a travel-related gift in an old road map. Wrap a music related-gift in old sheet music. Make your own wrapping paper from grocery bags, have the kids decorate with crayon or write a poem or the person’s name right on the paper or use potato stamps in a holiday design. If you MUST buy wrapping paper, look for recycled paper – avoid wrapping paper with metallic colors, which is often produced in an environmentally unfriendly manner.

ACCESSORIZE

Use luggage tags or tree ornaments as gift tags. Instead of ribbon, use natural raffia. Use flowers instead of ribbon.

SHIPPING NEWS

When shipping gifts, use real popcorn (popped, no butter!) instead of foam “peanuts” and enclose a note to feed the birds with it!
