FRESH ECO FACES KICK OFF LA FASHION WEEK
by Carrie Pollare, Editor
LA Fashion Week marches to the beat of its own drummer. Its runway shows are not traditional… and it’s not all about uber designers and the celebs who love them. What LA Fashion Week is mostly about is “Fresh Faces” in fashion, and every October, Gen Art’s “Fresh Faces” is the first show out of the gate, often jump starting the careers of amazing new designers, showing their spring collections. This time, eco fashion took the spotlight the night
before the main event, with an invitation only show.

Called "Fashionably Natural," actress Maggie Gyllenhaal (right) served as the host to four sustainable designers at the Petersen Automotive Museum: Velvet Leaf, Brigid Catiis, Popomomo and The Battalion. Velvet’s Leaf’s “A Geometric Revolution” featured short dresses with bold geometric elements, like the Juliette dress (shown bottom left) in gold silk. The collection from Brigid Catiis (shown bottom center), made from renewed vintage fabrics, could be best described as super cute and mostly featured super short dresses and shorts. Popomomo’s spring collection was so much about elements of surprise, including interesting cut-outs or fabric treatments on the backs of the garments, like the back of the hemp and organic cotton Apron dress (shown bottom right). Closing the show was The Battalion’s mostly bamboo and organic cotton collection, called “Harmony: A Duet of Flamenco & New Wave" (shown top), which was exactly that…lots of ruffles, lots of red and lots of drama.
But, wait, there’s more. Stay tuned, we’ve got many eco fashion show and event miles to walk before we sleep this week and we’ll be reporting to you on all of them!

LOVE YOUR ECOSKIN
by Bonny Osterhage
Loving the skin you’re in is much easier when you are wearing one of the fabulously sexy designs from ecoSkin. Created by fashion merchandiser turned designer, Sandy Skinner, ecoSkin clothing is for the woman who is fashion forward, hip to trends and knows her body. Most of all, she doesn’t want to sacrifice fashion for the environment— and, thanks to Skinner, she doesn’t have to. We recently caught up with the savvy woman behind ecoSkin and found out what makes her collection as natural and beautiful as, well, a second skin.
Nimli is one of our favorite "go to" places to find all the hottest eco friendly designer collections. Lately, they've been bowling us over with how many of the best of the best in eco fashion they keep adding to their roster...Skin & Threads, Prairie Underground, Ashley Watson, ecō-ga'nik, EDUN and so many more, from clothing & accessories to home decor & beauty products.
You walk into a room, wearing this seemingly traditional, understated, steel grey, v-neck sweater from EDUN, with just a little interesting black detail at the shoulders. But, when you turn around, wow! You reveal that the subtle detailing is part of the wingspan of a sprawling set of black wings across the back. Makes you feel a little goth…but in an elegant way. We just love EDUN’s style! Made of 100% wool. $195 at www.shopenvi.com.
QUITE THE SPECTACLE!
by Laurel House

Governor Palin, take note: Those fabulous reading glasses, that have caused a fashionista frenzy, are not green. We all know that you don’t believe global warming is a byproduct of human nature, but you can still do your part to help minimize the melt. How? Your glasses. Anyway, now that you have become, like Paris Hilton, a “celebrity,” follow the cue of the trend-setting heiress and move on to your next greatest fashion statement— sustainable glasses!

ICU Eyewear has come out with sustainable bamboo, reclaimed plastic and recycled metal reading glasses that are quite the spectacle. With 19 green styles, Palin can really go A-list and never wear the same frame twice, though that wouldn’t be very eco conscious, now, would it? The point? You no longer have excuses not to be green. Get your own at Anthropologie, Whole Foods or online at www.icueyewear.com.
WAKE UP TO A BRIGHTER TOMORROW
It’s almost election time, which means lots of talk about change, better futures and brighter tomorrows. However, we are casting our votes for the Brighter Tomorrow from Organicare, a product that actually delivers on its promises. Brighter Tomorrow is a two-step microderma oxygenation treatment from this new Dallas-based skin care company. It provides instant results in the skin brightening and smoothing departments, providing a targeted burst of oxygen to the upper layer of skin. The entire Organicare collection consists of nine different products, each designed to fit into a simple five-step system, depending on skin’s individual needs. It is, in fact, the first complete line of USDA certified organic performance skincare. Organicare can be purchased at www.icareorganics.com, as well as select Dillard’s and Nordstrom stores.
