Want to "Veg?" Try Planting Some!
by Amy Block-Muzekari

I can tell you first-hand that working in one's garden is at once, both relaxing and invigorating. Watching it burst into color each spring and summer is especially rewarding.

I was not surprised to learn that studies have shown that brainwaves that occur during gardening resemble those that occur during meditation. According to the American Horticultural Therapy Association, gardening has been proven to decrease stress, lower blood pressure and relieve muscle tension. And if that isn't reason enough to get elbow-deep in soil, all of that digging, planting and sowing burns an average of 300 calories per hour, while strengthening your muscles, increasing your body's flexibility and building up its endurance.

Visit The American Horticultural Therapy Association,
www.AHTA.org, for more information about the therapeutic benefits of gardening. The site currently offers instructions for building a raised garden bed, which is ideal for healthy plant growth. Gardening is good for your mind, as well as your body, and fresh-from-the-garden veggies are especially good for your taste buds...so dig in!
