Fabulous Finds: "Soleful" PurposeWhole Pet's Market

by Sarah Frances

My two beloved cats, Bogey and Bette Davis (yes, we live in Hollywood) are going through a picky eating stage. They turn up their little noses to all varieties of food I put down in front of them. This new problem, combined with the scary pet food recall controversy that had all of our furry friends in great danger, prompts me to be extra conscious about what I feed my fuzzy love muffins.

Leave it to Southern California to give birth to
My Pet…Naturally
, an all-natural pet shop, specializing in organic and raw food for pets. Owners Neil and Wendy Massa work on the precept that a higher quality of pet food makes for a higher quality of pet life. They designed their shop with a green eco-friendly emphasis, carrying only high-quality food, free of preservatives, pesticides, hormones and antibiotics.

But this is no over-the-top, designer style pet boutique. You won’t find racks of couture clothing for Yorkies or corporate products on its shelves, but rather plant cell based homeopathic remedies and minerals, supplements, vitamins, and natural shampoos and conditioners for a shiny coat and healthy skin. My Pet…Naturally also carries artisan-made, lead-free, ceramic food bowls, hemp beds, stylish collars, a variety of toys and training products, as well as gifts, cards, and, of course, treats! The shop’s gourmet pet bakery conjures up biscuits and snacks that even make my mouth water, like bacon & cheddar potstickers, cinnamon buns, double dipped bone cookies (hold the bone for me, please)…all made with basic wholesome ingredients.

Now in its second year, My Pet…Naturally is a booming enterprise, thanks to word of mouth by a loyal community following. Personalized service and custom food planning are just two aspects of a larger picture…a supportive community environment for furry friends and the people they look after.

“Too many things these days are anonymous,” says Wendy. “We know our customers and their animals. The shop is like a Starbucks or a “Cheers” for pet owners, a place to talk, hang out and compare notes about your pets.” The full service espresso bar (for humans) and internet-ready computer station to research pet products while you shop is also quite a perk.

I will definitely schedule a free consultation with Pat McKay, a homeopathic consultant with 30 years of experience, to figure out what might help my little Bette’s kidney issues. And, from now on, I will exclusively buy flushable biodegradable kitty litter carried at the shop, made without clay or silica, along with a new regime of raw digestible food for my picky little fuzz faces. (Only in an article on animals could I get away with these cutesy endearments…)
